Slipped knee caps in dogs
I have to take my pomeranian to the vet. She is about a year and a half old. I am pretty sure she has a slipped knee cap (luxating patella) Over the past couple of months, when she has chased a ball, she yips, then favors her back leg. But after rest she is o.k. Tonight, I took her on a walk and she was fine. My boyfriend came home, and took her on a brief stroll, and she started limping. I felt her leg, and could feel a little bulge. I tried to massage it for her, and she tolerated it for awhile, but then got pissy. I understand, it must hurt. I was trying to pop her knee back in place, but I am no doctor. I read stuff on the internet, and they recommend glucosamine. So, have any of you dealt with this sort of thing with your dogs? I am calling the first thing in the morning to get her an appointment.

Yes, my little dog (maltese X terrier mix) has had problems with her kneecaps since she was a puppy, I think it's the same thing. It would happen fairly frequently, especially after running around, but they'd pop back in by themselves. She gets periodic injections to strengthen her cartilage, I don't recall the name of the drug. Over a few years it gradually happened less, and now they don't trouble her at all.

Thanks for replying, Odbe. I took her in to her vet, and she has to have surgery. December 29th. She did get pain meds, and is doing ok. Momma is upset though:( Me being momma.

I have to go to bed soon, to wake up, and take my little girl in for surgery. Wish her luck. I am so nervous about this. Will let you monkeys know how it goes.

It went well, she is alive! Well, I expected her to be. I dropped her off at the vet this morning, and she was so excited to see the vet techs. Her whole body was wagging, she was kissing everyone. When I picked her up tonight, I sat her on the floor so I could pay the bill. She pissed on the floor and hobbled over to the exit. Back turned to everyone. I took her to the car and asked her if I could have a kiss. Turned her back to me. She slept once she came home, when she woke up I fed her and gave her pain meds, and now she is sleeping again. So, she is recovering, but seems a little pissed off at me. Oh well. Hope she has a short memory. I know she had major surgery, so she is not feeling well....I equal pain in her eyes now. :(

Glad it went ok, hope she's feeling better soon. I'm sure she'll forgive you :o

Layla went for her post op exam today. The vet replaced her bandage because it was too tight. She is running around on three legs like a maniac. Back to ordering the cats around, and barking at the creatures that dare to invade her back yard. The sliding glass door is her view to her domain. She did start messing with her bandage today. So, I took a large bandaid (met for humans) and covered the area she was messing with. After I put it on, I coated it with dish soap. She hates dish soap. That is what I used to coat the woodtrim in my house when she was chewing on it. It was the only thing that made her stop. Soooo....Hopefully this will make her leave her bandage alone.
