Books and Tunes
I need some good recommendations, so help me out. I need some new books and i need new tunes. I've been buried in law books far far too long and my CD collection is woefully outdated.
I don't get into the exploring mars/star trek sci-fi stuff, but possibly theoretical sci-fi, i like existentialist philosophy, classical literature, etc., but throw anything at me (but give me a thumbnail sketch) Tunes.. let's see.... i've always loved pink floyd/doors/etc, i used to play classical piano (a long time ago) so i like music with depth, not so much into thrashing music, but soulful, melodic, musically rich, etc (heard some norah jones and i liked that, ryan adams is pretty good too)--- just throw it out there.... Considering the intelligence/creativity/diversity of this crowd, I know you guys can help me out..... |
Well, I just bought the Norah Jones CD and it was worth every penny. I have been digging it seriously for the past week.
In my 'old age', I've been listening to stuff like Boney James (Body Language is awesome), Dave Koz (The Dance is a great CD) and for when I'm feeling latin, "Gypsy Passions: The New Flamenco" is fabulous. Then there is the old stuff that can't be beat... Try a little Bill Withers (Use Me, Aint No Sunshine, Lean On Me, Lovely Day)... On the rock side, Collective Soul's Disciplined Breakdown is one of the best I've heard. I play the piano and was a band nerd (flute) and I like a lot of different kinds of music... if it has what I consider to be quality. Anyway, happy listening! |
thanks isla... i've been threatening to get some bill withers-- a good friend of mine has that and has raved about it for years.... i just can't remember to borrow it.....

I think an excellent antidote to law books would be any book in the Discworld series by Terry Pratchett.
I don't particularly like sci-fi/fantasy books either, so I was relieved to find that Pratchett's version of fantasy is so down-to-earth! Think very intelligent yet hilarious satire. I turn to Pratchett's books when I need a good giggle. In fact, they often elicit a good guffaw! :D |
i totally agree on that one. just got Night Watch, the new one.. and again, it's great. i hope he never stops writing.
