Doesn't it look like it would tip right over?

Bridge engineering is always so amazing to me.

Yeah. One ferocious wind.

I mean 7 pillars for a 1.6 mile bridge! That's psycho!
|
Spicy...more evidence!!!
Pretentious Arteest Alert. “A work of man must fuse with nature. The pillars had to look almost organic, like they had grown from the earth,” said Foster, who also designed London’s Millennium Bridge. I have never seen pillars like that growing ANYWHERE...esp not in a straight line for 1.6 miles with absolute geometric repeating triangles on top. Ya, sure, that looks "natural". ****ing arteests. ![]() Nevertheless, it does look cool. :) |

Mr. Spart is an architect. The reason he got out of it is that he hated the "culture of architecture." When Mr. Spart and I met and were dating, when we both worked for the prima donna architect, we worked in a loft/renovated warehouse in the downtown historic district and there were a LOT of pretentious artsy-architect types. We even had a code name for them: "The People Downstairs", from a gallery/architectural firm housed on the building's first floor. Even today, when we see something that is just too-too artsy/pretentious/Emperor's New Clothes/bullshit minimalist schlock, we say: "Oh...yes...the People Downstairs. What an interesting concept! " Then we will grab the nearest writing instrument and blank sheet and dash off a totally unintelligible, huge dramatic scribble with broad, flourishing gestures, interjecting: "Hah? Ah? Now...you can SEE! Hah? Is it not...Hah?" and the other will affirm the brilliance of the concept. "Oh, my GOD you are so....my GOD. " Of course, our amusement with the "People Downstairs" is partly because in our egotistical opinions we have infinitely more talent, both of us, than these mere poseurs. In some ways we're well suited -- you should see us. Picking out a color for a 2" x 2" accent tile to be used maybe four times on an entire wall is a three day production involving high drama and ten trips to supply houses, passionate arguments and reconciliations, etc. Thank God he can do his own design work, because we would drive anybody else right off the job. ;) |
heh ^^^ :)
See, if I could design a bridge like that, I would'nt feel like it needed justification with that nonsense "nature" crap. I'd just stand there and say, "look, I made THAT out of concrete and metal...neat huh!" :D This is a test of the Pretentious Arteest System: "I feel my unique Flatt hats reflect the ballance of man and his enviorment. To be one with, yet unobscured by, nature. One is In the enviorment by being within the shell of the fabric, covered yet not concealed. Man and Nature actualy cooperate with each other through complementary form in fashion." *waits for the orders to roll in* :D |
heh heh heh...
Well, the thing is, Mr. Spart has tons of design talent and does amazingly good, original work, but having to do the tapdance and spout "Emperor's New Clothes"-speak like the above quoted is what put him off architecture as a profession. He's a very simple, self-effacing guy, and to have to do the dog-and-pony show required by most "big" clients was just too much. I mean, can you imagine if the guy above said, "It's a bridge. Yep. Ought to hold up, I think. Hey, what time does the Blue Jackets game start?" ;) Artiste-speak is just not his style. But often the sizzle is as expected as the steak, if not more so. |
