Johnny Carson dies at 79

12:57 PM CST on Sunday, January 23, 2005

Associated Press

LOS ANGELES - Johnny Carson, the "Tonight Show" TV host who served America a smooth nightcap of celebrity banter, droll comedy and heartland charm for 30 years, has died. He was 79.

Johnny Carson "Mr. Carson passed away peacefully early Sunday morning," his nephew, Jeff Sotzing, told The Associated Press. "He was surrounded by his family, whose loss will be immeasurable. There will be no memorial service."

Sotzing would not give further details, including the time of death or the location.

The boyish-looking Nebraska native with the disarming grin, who survived every attempt to topple him from his late-night talk show throne, was a star who managed never to distance himself from his audience.

aw. :( Wow... he was so young...

Victoria de Los Angeles (one of the greatest operatic sopranos in history) just passed away, too... I wonder who the third will be... someone pretty profoundly important, I bet. :(

Oh wow!
How sad. He was like a neighbour or something. You knew him, you enjoyed his wit.

Now there goes a decent fellow. Rest in Peace Johnny.

Carson was the best, I have missed him since he left, now I mourn for the loss. I had always hoped he might get involved with something else.

Actually, there was a report just a few days previous that he was sending them to Letterman, who DID use some of Carson's jokes in his monologues.

Awww, poor Jay Leno. You should see him, he can barely talk, all cried out.

They're showing old clips that are hilarious. RIP Johnny.

Oh, Topcat, I'm so sorry.

He went peacefully in his sleep?
