circumcision

I couldn't find the old debate thread about this topic, but I just read this article which I thought was relevant to the argument that circumcision didn't have any health benefits.

Circumcision may offer Africa AIDS hope
Procedure linked to much lower rate of new HIV infections

Wednesday, July 6, 2005
San Francisco Chronicle

French and South African AIDS researchers have called an early halt to a study of adult male circumcision to reduce HIV infection after initial results reportedly showed that men who had the procedure dramatically lowered their risk of contracting the virus.

The study's preliminary results, disclosed Tuesday by the Wall Street Journal, showed that circumcision reduced the risk of contracting HIV by 70 percent -- a level of protection far better than the 30 percent risk reduction set as a target for an AIDS vaccine.

lol zennie how about quoting the last paragraph :D

Quote:

Although the apparent protective effect of circumcision has been noted for more than 20 years, doubts linger as to whether circumcision itself is protective, or whether the lower risk may be the result of cultural practices among those who circumcise. HIV rates are low in Muslim communities, for example, which practice male circumcision but also engage in ritual washing before sex and frown on promiscuity.
kind of a different conclusion isn't it? :p

I'm not going into detail but if a man doesn't bathe properly it's not good to have the skin on there.

Hey Craig you porn dog I wasn't refering to sex, just the reason why circumcision was considered benefitial. The reason it became popular in the States is because men got fewer infections on there if they didn't have the skin.

i am thinking about having my toenails removed for that very same reason! i'd hate to get infections on my feet ......

venusupnorth 07-14-2005 08:17 AM

Hey good luck with that razormix, I can imagine that you must really smell since you don't clean your feet.

A majority of American men are circumcised so be careful who you bust on here. I'm not American and in my country this ritual isn't practiced, but I was just explaining the reason why men are circumsised when religion is not the factor. This became popular in the 30's in America but I think in the last 10 yrs. it is decreasing in popularity.

"Uncircumcised women are unclean"
Improved cleanliness is one of the claimed benefits of female circumcision. In some societies, the word for female circumcision also refers to "purification" or "cleansing." Local custom has dictated that uncircumcised women cannot handle food or water, and may be poisonous to men or babies that come into contact with the clitoris. The use of clitoridectomy to relieve health problems was also used into the twentieth century in the United States, often to alleviate hysteria or excessive masturbation. Despite the perception that uncircumcised women are unclean or unhealthy, many consequences such as infections, scars, and infertility supposedly result from FGM as well. The difference in perceptions needs to be challenged by locally based information seeking about the consequences of FGM.

Maybe, one day, male circumcision will become just as unpopular as female circumcision .... (the popularity of female circumcision in africa has decreased drastically i hear - some people dare call it mutilation - and very few americans will support female circumcision)

Waris Dirie wrote an incredible book about her life and experience with being circumcised. She's fighting to get this ritual banned in Africa.

THe Book

There are an obscene amout of myths that go around about this topic... I find it all rather puzling.. Evolution made the body the way it is for a reason, don't fvck with it.

craig johnston 07-15-2005 06:38 AM

^^^

Max Headroom 07-15-2005 09:40 AM
