man, the storm is coming. I'm cycling up to one of the farmhouses to shelter there, and to go to a dinner party planned by some friends of mine. I look over as the sky turns that lemony-dark color that precedes the arrival of a strong supercell, and there's Dave, my colleague, cycling up the neighboring driveway in one of those inside-the-wheel contraptions you see on the playa so much.

I duck into the house as the rain starts. the wind is leaking through unsealed jalousie windows. papers and plastic bags are being blown around the rooms. I do my best to help stow things away and seal the windows against the gale, and then I meet the other guests.

I've never met any of them before, and they all seem to be Trinidadian. one couple has a black poodle they've brought with them - the dog is sweet and well-behaved, but he's had a craniotomy and is most disturbingly and flagrantly missing the top of his skull. I wonder if this can possibly be a good thing, to have his brain exposed like that.
