Slipped knee caps in dogs
I have to take my pomeranian to the vet. She is about a year and a half old. I am pretty sure she has a slipped knee cap (luxating patella) Over the past couple of months, when she has chased a ball, she yips, then favors her back leg. But after rest she is o.k. Tonight, I took her on a walk and she was fine. My boyfriend came home, and took her on a brief stroll, and she started limping. I felt her leg, and could feel a little bulge. I tried to massage it for her, and she tolerated it for awhile, but then got pissy. I understand, it must hurt. I was trying to pop her knee back in place, but I am no doctor. I read stuff on the internet, and they recommend glucosamine. So, have any of you dealt with this sort of thing with your dogs? I am calling the first thing in the morning to get her an appointment.

Yes, my little dog (maltese X terrier mix) has had problems with her kneecaps since she was a puppy, I think it's the same thing. It would happen fairly frequently, especially after running around, but they'd pop back in by themselves. She gets periodic injections to strengthen her cartilage, I don't recall the name of the drug. Over a few years it gradually happened less, and now they don't trouble her at all.

I have to go to bed soon, to wake up, and take my little girl in for surgery. Wish her luck. I am so nervous about this. Will let you monkeys know how it goes.

It went well, she is alive! Well, I expected her to be. I dropped her off at the vet this morning, and she was so excited to see the vet techs. Her whole body was wagging, she was kissing everyone. When I picked her up tonight, I sat her on the floor so I could pay the bill. She pissed on the floor and hobbled over to the exit. Back turned to everyone. I took her to the car and asked her if I could have a kiss. Turned her back to me. She slept once she came home, when she woke up I fed her and gave her pain meds, and now she is sleeping again. So, she is recovering, but seems a little pissed off at me. Oh well. Hope she has a short memory. I know she had major surgery, so she is not feeling well....I equal pain in her eyes now.
