PLANTS

I got a plant for my office so I am not the only thing alive in here. It is a Pachira (according to the tag on it). It seems easy enough to take care of cuz I am suppose to let the soil dry between waterings and I will forget to water it anyway so it will work out. It will die, it is just guessing on when.

OH! So I am at the store and I pick out the plant, then I see the pot that I want. Well, the pot is the last one and there is a chip on the side. I figure I can use a little marker and nail poilish, no big deal - but I will ask for a discount of course. I go up to the register and the young cashier has her cell phone ringing and can't speak properly at work to save her life. Anyhow, she tells me they usually give a 10% discount. Eh, I figure it should be more, but it isn't worth the hassle. She scans it. It comes out to $12.00. She says out loud, "okay, so it is $12 and 10% of that is....um......" I offer no suggestions in this moronic equation. If I can figure out 10% a monkey can. She stares stupified at the calculator then just punches something into the register"...uh...I just gave it to you for $9. Is that okay?" I smile and say that is fine. Oh so fine.

So how long before I kill it?

If you have Microsoft Outlook you can set a recurring reminder to water your green baby...

I always transplant mine when I first get them. Plus, how does it look? Can you see roots? Does it look stuffed in the pot? If so, you should definately transplant it into a pot thats a size or so bigger than the one it's in with some new potting soil. It'll be happy to be able to stretch its legs.

Well, ya gotta be careful with that. Some plants (like ficus benjamina) like to be potbound in order to encourage them to expend energy on reaching for the sky. This I learned the hard way. I have a ficus that's been working on its root system for a couple of years now. And I wanted it as a shade tree.

I did not know that. I have really bad luck with Ficus plants, and I love them so much.

Be careful with fertilizer - you can burn the roots, especially in a plant in a small pot. The potting soil probably has enough nutrients in it for now, and you can get Miracle-Gro sticks to put into the soil every few weeks to keep it up to par.

Are there windows in your office? Or all artificial lighting?
