It's a style of comedy. It's very campy, not meant to actually resemble reality (also like "Twin Peaks") but instead (besides being really entertaining) convey certain ideas and concepts, usually in a humorous way (until the last couple seasons, when things got really, really dark... still pretty interesting tho').
