My father died, in an industrial accident, when I was 6. My mother, with the hinderence, er, help of her mother raised my self, my younger brother, and our younger sister.
Mom was a strong woman, raised during the Great Depression, who had been on her own since she was sixteen, other than the brief period she had Dad. Even when she was slowly dying from a painful cancer she was unwilling to let anyone else support her. We differed on many things, especially religious matters and her stubborn refusal to 'be a burden'; but we found common ground on the ones that really mattered. She died a year ago. What advice I have: there's always common ground, if you want it. |
