My dad has never been involved in my life. Used to go visit him in California during the summers. Then after high school I didn't talk to him (or anyone on my dad's side of the family) for about 6 years. After about 4 months of sparce communication, it ended until now.

I wrote him a letter last February telling him that I was finally graduating from college and involved in a serious relationship and that it seemed like he should be in my life. In the letter I said that I wasn't mad at him for things that happened in the past and that I just really wanted to be able to talk to him.
I sent the letter to his Mom's house (my grandma who I haven't talked to in 10 years) and hoped that he would get it and he did...just last weekend. I found out that my one older 1/2 brother who was in jail for a long time is out of jail and the other 1/2 brother is in jail (for DUIs). One cousin had a stroke & died at 42, another one is a lesbian and they had twins a year ago from artificial insimination. Our conversation wasn't heavy at all. It was a big step for him to call me. I don't really NEED him in my life and have never really felt like my life has a huge void in it b/c of my absent father. But recently I have felt like I WANT him in my life. I don't really have any expectations from him, and I don't know what will happen. I guess that is what makes life interesting.

I'm glad for you because it sounds like it was what you needed. It's at a time when you can accept him and he can accept you, and it's a way to mend the past and heal. Good for you, and I give you credit for having a lot of courage.

It's amazing sometimes how something sudden can fill a void that we are unaware exists.
I hope for you that you can find satisfaction and fulfillment, even to the slightest extent, from gaining knowledge about this man and your family. Fathers are funny, in the way that their absence and presence can affect us so profoundly, even when we're not aware. -From Another Melissa ![]() |

My Dad just called and offered to pay for a plane ticket if I wanted to go down there for Thanksgiving.
