Once in high school, some friends and I went camping in southern Oregon and saw the Northern Lights. Totally sober and nothing in our systems to cause any group hallucination. It was such an amazing experience, I'll never forget it or the feeling that it created. When we went back to school, we asked our chemistry/science teacher about how likely it was that we would be able to see the Northern Lights down by the California border and he was highly skeptical but we sure did see it!

Yeah, there are no "rules". It's unusual to see them at that latitude, maybe, but certainly not impossible at all.
