Triage is, not even in first world countries, done under the belief that there are enough resources to go around.
This is because there are not enough resources to go around. There are not enough organs to serve all the translant needers before they die. There are not enough hosital beds, as in this case, to see that everyone gets one. There is not enough vaccine to innoculate everyone who needs it. There are many things that there are not enough of, and they are being allocated on a regular basis. Even in the article in question it was mentioned that the doctor was concerned that if this bed was continuously used by this man, it would not be available for others who need it. Taking the man out of ICU is not merely a family decision. The ICU is a community resource, and the community must have say in how its resources are used. |
