The medical professionals are the community's representatives when it comes time to evaluate the use of medical resources. They are the ones who understand the traadeoffs that such require.

Two weeks in an ICU might not sound like much, but in our local hospital, according to a friend, who is a cardiac surgeon, it might well mean three or more other people died who did not need to.
