If the resources were available, in this case, the bed not needed, then pallative care would be fine.
But here's a what-if for you. You're the doctor. You look the other way because you don't expect the ICU to be needed. Crap happens and it is. Now you've got a guy you know is going to die sitting in your last ICU bed and a guy in ER who would make it if they had the ICU bed. Now what do you do? I'm in the US. In the San Francisco bay area, which, right now is indeed having a budget crisis when it comes to emergency care -- thus my remark about the assumption not being that there's enough resources. |
