I don't like over-prescribed antibiotics either, but you sound like you have an infection. What colour were the crusties glueing your lids?
I know this is all obvious stuff, but I just have to offer my opinion.
You might have a sinus infestion of sorts. The tubes from eyes to sinus to throat to ears. Swallowing mucus with infection in it will upset your stomach.
Take a course of antibiotics. I don't recommend this to anyone for just anything. I know about superbugs, but yours sounds antibiotic worthy.
Do you get crusty eyed when you get a cold? If not, this is a little more antibiotic worthy.
