I think the option to change avatars is off. I gave a quick look and if you selected the option by your old avatar that deleted it. After that you can not add another one. Right under the option you must have used it says:
"Note: if you have a custom avatar selecting this option will delete it."

Good luck, once Ze does some more stuff to the board I'm sure he'll fix that.
