Yup, there were a lot of older computer applications that were still using 2 digits for the year. All had to be modified for 4 digits, or logic coded that determined the century based on some algorithm. Some programmers (ahem) made a LOT of money in the couple of years preceding 2000.

I have no idea what you people are talking about.....January 1, 2000....one of my webservers said the date was January 1, 19100.......THE HORROR! I'm not sure I have been the same since the 3 seconds it took me to fix it.

Well, the impact of something like that date snafu on a large system that calculates, for example, interest or insurance premiums, would be catastrophic. I never did hear of any company having major problems related to Y2K though, so I guess all those well-paid programmers did their jobs

Believe me, I'm not belittling what you did.....guess you didn't catch the joke....but from another point of view......had well paid programmers accounted for this in the first place.......

Well, I guess I can see your point, noxx. But, when I was just a young wisp of a programmer, I wrote many a program that allotted only 2 digits for the year. Whole applications were written that way, and we DID think about it. The ACCEPTED mindset at the time (and certainly 10 years earlier) was that these applications couldn't POSSIBLY still be running in the year 2000, as they would SURELY be replaced by then!!!!
