female phobia?
Doon Doon, how did you find out this is mainly a female phobia? Where did you look? I am female, I do have it (although my brother has it too). I have had this at least since I was 6. So happy to find fellow "sufferers".

I just remembered that many years ago I used to have a fear of dioramas.
I was convinced that the "people" inside were actually stuffed and dried. Apparently the first time I went to the Museum of Natural History in NYC I started screaming uncontrollably when we entered the "Early Settlers" exhibit.

Ha...I did something similar when I was little, only it was at a thai restaurant and I was scared of a statue of a lady.

Worst baby story ever
My parents tell everyone they can whenever they hear and combination of the words fear or Native American or diorama or scream. Which is kinda often, strangely... It's like this little light bulb goes off above their head as soon as they realize what an embarrassing story they have to tell ![]()

i have a friend who is afraid of museum dioramas. although not the ones with the human mannequins. she's afraid of the ones that actually contain taxidermy specimens of animals. because she's terrified that she's going to be looking at one and then suddenly it's going to move.

On that note, I don't really fear elevators. Infact, I quite enjoy the smell of them. ![]() |

i believe that dreams can be analyzed but i don't believe in most stock dream analysis. for example, most dream analysis (trust me, i've looked into it) interpret dreams about elevators to be about moving between levels of consciousness or rising to success and wealth.
but let's get serious, symbolism is all well and good but sometimes the obvious makes the most sense. the elevator disaster is about being completely out of control and trapped. it's being moved through circumstances without any power to control direction or ensure personal safety. it's about the sense of inevitability and dread that surrounds the unavoidable. it's the complete inability to extricate oneself from threat. you're not only trapped within a small windowless box, but you're also surrounded by the concrete infrastructure of a building. it's more than claustrophobia, it's buried alive. but that's just my armchair analysis.

I know Wikipedia can be somewhat unreliable... but it is still something interesting to consider. Your brother has it too? What is his reaction to "holey" things? The same as mine? If his symptoms are the same...he is the first male I have EVER come across who has this phobia.

hm - when i was a kid, I had an irrational fear of earth-moving equipment. backhoes and bulldozers etc.
made myself get over it when i was a teen ![]() I think they reminded me of dinosaurs - I had fantasies that they'd come over and eat our car with us still inside. |
