I can't believe that after 9-11 they would even think about privatizing air traffic control. So I'm thinking this will never pass, but just in case:



Recently, the Federal government took over the task of baggage security screening at airports across the country. This operation used to be done by private companies. Studies found that the employees that were hired by the private companies were underpaid and undertrained. In some cases, the employees that the private companies hired even had criminal records. If you've been in an airport recently you can attest to the fact that a far better job is being done with baggage security. Taking over the baggage screening was a good move by the Government.

Unfortunately, Congress is planning on another change that isn't a good move. There is currently a bill up for vote to sell off the air traffic system to a private corporation. Some Congresspeople think this is a good way to save money.**

I work as an air traffic contoller at Chicago Air Route Traffic Control Center. I am a Federal employee. It took seven years for me to become a journeyman controller. Of the 200+ trainees that started with me, only one third made it till the end. The rest were "screened out" because they didn't have the ability to do the job. I was one of the fortunate ones and my hard work paid off. The people I work with are dedicated professionals who work hard to make sure you safely and efficiently make it to your destination. There is no one standing behind me saying "Could you squeeze them tighter? We need to make our third
quarter projections". Safety is our #1 job not profit!

Do you think a private corporation will spend that kind of time and money on training? Do you want the best people you can get guiding your plane through the sky? If you, like me, think selling off the air traffic system to the lowest bidder is a bad idea there is something you can do. It only takes two minutes and requires you to make a toll free call to your representatives office.

Some have asked what to say when they call 1-866 I FLY SAFE and what will most likely happen.

When you call the number - this is what should happen.

You will be asked to enter in your zip code and a computer will connect you to your representatives office.

You will most likely only talk to the receptionist - (which is ok) - It
is highly unlikely that you will speak with anyone else.

This is what you tell the receptionist.


"Hi - My name is __________ and I'm from ___________.

I'm asking (fill in the member of Congress' name) to vote NO on any effort to privatize air traffic control."

The receptionist will most likely ask you again your name and address and thank you for calling.

So please, make the calls now to 1-866-I-FLY-SAFE and tell Congress to vote NO on ATC privatization!
