Rune- They zoomed past a representation of an atom.

Here's what the real things look like. The pointy things are iron atoms on copper. The waves you see are actually electrons (remember their duality). A single atom by itself would be spherical, but they infringe on each others' spaces. Incidentally, this setup is called a quantum corral.
