The case has also embroiled the nation’s politicians, with Seiichi Ota, a senior member of the ruling Liberal Democratic Party and former minister, effectively condoning the rapists. During a debate in July in a Diet committee, Ota said: "Gang rape shows the people who do it are still virile, and that is okay. I think that might make them close to normal."
