Did your mother have the flu when she was pregnant with you Mr. Huffer?

By PAUL H.B. SHIN

WHEN A WOMAN GETS the flu during the first half of a pregnancy, it triples the risk that her child will develop schizophrenia later in life, a new study suggests.

Previous research also has hinted at a possible link between the debilitating mental illness and prenatal exposure to influenza.

But the new study, which tested blood samples taken from pregnant women 30 years ago, is the first to verify which women actually suffered a bout of flu during their pregnancies.

Because schizophrenia usually starts in adulthood, it wasn’t until recently that it became possible to do this study, said Dr. Ezra Susser of Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health, a psychiatrist and member of the research team.

The paralyzing effects of schizophrenia were dramatized in the 2001 movie “A Beautiful Mind,” in which Russell Crowe portrays the real-life struggle of Nobel Prize-winning mathematician John Nash.

Susser’s team also found that if a pregnant woman gets the flu during the first trimester, her child’s risk of developing schizophrenia jumps seven-fold. But a relatively small sample size lead to mixed results, which will need to be confirmed by additional studies, Susser said.

Because the flu virus rarely crosses the placenta, it is unlikely that the bug itself is causing injury to the fetus, Susser said. Research in mice indicates that the pregnant mother’s immune response to the flu virus could affect the unborn offspring.

The findings, published yesterday in the Archives of General Psychiatry, could also change public health recommendations for whether pregnant women should get flu shots.

“If you were to vaccinate women prior to becoming pregnant, that would seem sensible. But once a woman is pregnant, we don’t really understand what the vaccine would do,” Susser said. “It could be that the vaccination could make things worse.”

But Susser cautioned against making public health recommendations until more research is done. Even with a three-fold increase in risk, the absolute odds of a child developing schizophrenia are quite low, and other factors may be equally important.

For example, the children of women who live in urban areas are three times as likely to develop schizophrenia as the children of rural women.

Blood samples used for the latest study were collected and stored in a freezer in 1959-1966 in Oakland, Calif., as part of a wider study into environmental causes of schizophrenia.
