guess who said it

[okay. let's try a new quote thread. offer a quote. the next person has to guess (correctly) who said it and then offer a whole 'nuther quote. let's begin.]

who said this?

The Euclidean path integral over all topologically trivial metrics can be done by time slicing and so is unitary when analytically continued to the Lorentzian. On the other hand, the path integral over all topologically non-trivial metrics is asymptotically independent of the initial state. Thus the total path integral is unitary and information is not lost in the formation and evaporation of black holes. The way the information gets out seems to be that a true event horizon never forms, just an apparent horizon.

Steven Hawking in regards to the Black Hole

Who said this?

"From birth, man carries the weight of gravity on his shoulders. He is bolted to earth. But man has only to sink beneath the surface and he is free. "

In the beginning the Universe was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move

Douglas Adams--- opening to The Restaurant at the End of the Universe

one sec while I queue up the next quote:

"Well I hardly think this is good enough. I think it would be more appropriate if the box bore a large red label warning larks vomit."

John Cleese as "Inspector Praline" in Monty Python's "Whizzo Chocolate Company" sketch (a.k.a."Crunchy Frog").

"In spite of everything I still believe that people are really good at heart. I simply can't build up my hopes on a foundation consisting of confusion, misery and death."

Anne Frank!

I pretty much live my life by this one which is funny seeing as I'm part of the system;

"I could feel a sharp stab of anger rise up in me. Unknowingly, I was standing at the source of the Nile, the thin first trickle from under rock and fern, the beginning of a great river of anger and frustration at the arrogance, the careless disregard for feelings and the patronising manner of the australian medical profession."

It would have to be either Stanley or Speake (sp?), the British explorers, but which? I would guess Stanley, since he is so quotable.

Am I right? I am off to hunt down a quote in case I am.

Doh! I must not have read through the entire thing, because if I had, I would have seen the reference to the Australian medical profession, which would certainly rule out my guess.

So I would now guess Bryce Courtney, I suppose, but who in the ham sandwich is that?

*utterly blank countenance* (Sorry!)

OK, in (hint) a famous couple's correspondence, who wrote:

"Alas, poor imagination! How faintly and imperfectly do you supply the want of the original and reality!"

(And to whom was it written?)

Ooooh, good guess! Alas, no.

Earlier than Simmy and JP. And it's not a translation.
