Oh, the comfort, the inexpressible comfort of feeling safe with a person, having neither to weigh thoughts nor measure words, but pouring them all out, just as they are, chaff and grain together, certain that a faithful hand will take and sift them, keep what is worth keeping, and with a breath of kindness blow the rest away.

So many gods, so many creeds,
So many paths that wind and wind,
While just the art of being kind
Is all the sad world needs.

Is this really where we have ended up—with this superannuated fantasy posing as a slice of modern life? On TV, “Sex and the City” was never as insulting as “Desperate Housewives,” which strikes me as catastrophically retrograde, but, almost sixty years after “All About Eve,” which also featured four major female roles, there is a deep sadness in the sight of Carrie and friends defining themselves not as Bette Davis, Anne Baxter, Celeste Holm, and Thelma Ritter did—by their talents, their hats, and the swordplay of their wits—but purely by their ability to snare and keep a man. --Anthony Lane

It's hard to argue against cynics - they always sound smarter than optimists because they have so much evidence on their side.

I have come to the conclusion that my subjective account of my motivation is largely mythical on almost all occasions. I don't know why I do things.

tralfamadorian: i am a tralfamadorian, seeing all time as you might see a stretch of the rocky mountains. all time is all time. it does not change. it does not lend itself to warnings or explanations. it simply is. take it moment by moment, and you will find that we are all, as i’ve said before, bugs in amber

billy pilgrim: you sound to me as though you don’t believe in free will

tralfamadorian: if i hadn’t spent so much time studying earthlings, i wouldn’t have any idea what was meant by free will. i’ve visited thirty-one inhabited planets in the universe, and i have studied reports on one hundred more. only on earth is there any talk of free will.

as we doze off into dreams, flying clowns and talking cars appear completely normal. we are not aware that we are dreaming, and it feels like an acceptable version of reality. however, in a lucid dream, we are able to differentiate between the dream and reality. in other words, we know that we are dreaming.

when i started meditating, i was filled with anxieties and fears. i felt a sense of depression and anger.

i often took out this anger on my first wife. after i had been meditating for about two weeks, she came to me and said, 'what's going on?' i was quiet for a moment. but finally i said, 'what do you mean?' and she said, 'this anger, where did it go?' and i hadn't even realized that it had lifted.

i call that depression and anger the Suffocating Rubber Clown Suit of Negativity. it's suffocating, and that rubber stinks. but once you start meditating and diving within, the clown suit starts to dissolve. You finally realize how putrid was the stink when it starts to go. then, when it dissolves, you have freedom.

anger and depression and sorrow are beautiful things in a story, but they're like poison to the filmmaker or artist. they're like a vice grip on creativity. if you're in that grip, you can hardly get out of bed, much less experience the flow of creativity and ideas. you must have clarity to create. you have to be able to catch ideas.

With regard to the superstitions of logicians, I shall never tire of emphasizing a small terse fact, which these superstitious minds hate to concede—namely, that a thought comes when “it” wishes, and not when “I” wish, so that it is a falsification of the facts of the case to say that the subject “I” is the condition of the predicate “think.” It thinks: but that this “it” is precisely the famous old “ego” is, to put it mildly, only a supposition, an assertion, and assuredly not an “immediate certainty.”
