in 'rich and strange', there was a scene in which the young man is swimming with a girl and she stands with her legs astride, saying to him, 'i bet you can't swim between my legs!' i shot it in a tank. the boy dives, and when he's about to pass between her legs, she suddenly locks his head between her legs and you see the bubbles rising from his mouth. finally, she releases him, and as he comes up, gasping for air, he sputters out, 'you almost killed me that time!' and she answers, 'wouldn't that have been a beautiful death?' i don't think we could show that today because of censorship |

Come unto these yellow sands,
And then take hands: Curtsied when you have, and kiss'd The wild waves whist, Foot it featly here and there; And, sweet sprites, the burthen bear. Hark, hark! Bow-wow. The watch-dogs bark. Bow-wow. Hark, hark! I hear The strain of strutting chanticleer Cry, Cock-a-diddle-dow. Full fathom five thy father lies; Of his bones are coral made; Those are pearls that were his eyes: Nothing of him that doth fade, But doth suffer a sea-change Into something rich and strange. Sea-nymphs hourly ring his knell: Ding-dong. Hark! now I hear them—Ding-dong, bell. |

one day henny-penny was picking up corn in the cornyard when –whack!– something hit her upon the head. “goodness gracious me!” said henny-penny; “the sky’s a-going to fall; I must go and tell the king.”

Jerome and Sylvie, the young, upwardly mobile couple in Things, lust for the good life. "They wanted life's enjoyment, but all around them enjoyment was equated with ownership." Surrounded by Paris's tantalizing exclusive boutiques, they exist in a paralyzing vacuum of frustration, caught between the fantasy of "the film they would have liked to live" and the reality of life's daily mundanities.
In direct contrast with Jerome and Sylvie's cravings, the nameless student in A Man Asleep attempts to purify himself entirely of material desires and ambition. He longs "to want nothing. Just to wait, until there is nothing left to wait for. Just to wander, and to sleep." Yearning to exist on neutral ground as "a blessed parenthesis," he discovers that this wish is by its very nature a defeat. ~review of a Georges Perec book at Amamzon dot com

The Self cannot be known by anyone
Who desists not from unrighteous ways Controls not the senses, stills not the mind And practices not meditation ~The Katha Upanishad

Benjamin: I picked up a little Cantonese while I was in the Orient. You know, you sound a lot like you're from Kowloon Bay as opposed to Hong Kong.
