Pair Who Hatched Bomb Threat Get Prison

May 16, 8:51 PM (ET)

JACKSON, Mo. (AP) - The idea seemed a long shot at best: One man would call police and accuse his friend of carrying a bomb in hopes the arresting officer would rough up the suspect enough to support a lawsuit.

Instead of a civil case windfall, Duane Haffner and Leotis Sylvester Allen are going to prison. A judge on Monday sentenced Haffner, 23, to five years for making a terroristic threat. Allen, 22, received a four-year term. Both men are from the southeast Missouri town Jackson.

"This was more a crime of stupidity rather than terrorism," Cape Girardeau County prosecutor Morley Swingle said.

Circuit Judge Ben Lewis will re-evaluate the pair's behavior in prison after 120 days and decide whether to release them on probation.

Jackson police received a call on Feb. 21 with a tip that a man planned to take a bomb hidden in his shoe into the county courthouse the next day. The caller described the clothes the man would wear down to a Timberland black hoodie.

Swingle said detectives recognized the voice of Haffner in the recorded call, checked phone records and determined the call came from a drug and alcohol treatment center where Haffner and Allen were staying. Police said Haffner admitted making the call at the direction of Allen.

Authorities said Allen paid Haffner $25 to make the call. Allen never intended to carry a bomb, but hoped to profit by being tackled by police and suing for injuries he hoped would ensue from the struggle, police said.

The law against making terroristic threats, defined as a statement made for the purpose of frightening 10 or more people, was passed by state lawmakers in 2000.

"My feeling is that 9-11 took all the humor out of bomb threats," Swingle said.

This story could not be any better. They're even named Carlos and Fernando, and they've saved a little baby flamingo. Brilliant.

LONDON (AFP) - A pair of gay flamingos have adopted an abandoned chick, becoming parents after being together for six years, a British conservation organisation said Monday.

Carlos and Fernando had been desperate to start a family, even chasing other flamingos from their nests to take over their eggs at the Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust (WWT) in Slimbridge near Bristol.

But their egg-sitting prowess made them the top choice for taking an unhatched egg under their wings when one of the Greater Flamingo nests was abandoned.

The couple, together for six years, can feed chicks by producing milk in their throats.

"Fernando and Carlos are a same sex couple who have been known to steal other flamingos' eggs by chasing them off their nest because they wanted to rear them themselves," said WWT spokeswoman Jane Waghorn.

"They were rather good at sitting on eggs and hatching them so last week, when a nest was abandoned, it seemed like a good idea to make them surrogate parents."

Gay flamingos are not uncommon, she added.

"If there aren't enough females or they don't hit it off with them, they will pair off with other males," she said.

I'd like to publicly confess and atone for the very unkind thought I had upon reading this story. It was knee-jerk and inhumane and wouldn't really fix anything.

(May 22, 2007)—The official White House photograph appears to tell the story.

It shows President Bush at the wheel of his big F-250 pickup Sunday after he and First Lady Laura Bush welcomed NATO Secretary General Jaap de Hoop Scheffer and his wife to their Crawford-area ranch.

What it doesn’t show is Mr. Bush wearing a seatbelt.

Making matters worse, the photo was taken just a day before law enforcement agencies in Texas and across the country stepped-up enforcement of seatbelt and child safety seat laws in a coast-to-coast effort to get drivers to buckle up and to make sure that children are properly and safely secured.

The annual "Click It or Ticket" program is using checkpoints, patrols and advertisements to enforce seat-belt laws and federal officials say police will be making more traffic stops and writing more tickets, but evidently not to chief executives.

A reporter asked Press Secretary Tony Snow Tuesday whether he had “any luck on finding out about the president’s policy on wearing seatbelts.”

Snow replied, “Well, it's always important to wear seatbelts, especially when driving slowly on the ranch”
“But I think it's, in point of fact…we encourage everybody to wear their seatbelts,” he said.

This year’s Click It or Ticket crackdown targets primarily late-night motorists, which may get Mr. Bush at least partially off the hook.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration says the death rates for night drivers and passengers are three times higher than for those riding in the daytime.

And of those who died in nighttime crashes, nearly two-thirds weren't wearing seat belts.

The seat-belt crackdown, which coincides with the Memorial Day weekend, ends on June 3.

I just read this article and couldn't help but chuckle to myself. I live in Florida and here alligators are as common as anything else. Everyone knows they take certain things for granted, but they never fully understand to what extent. I once had an alligator take up residence in my highschool, and I've seen express way traffic stopped for hours because of there was an alligator in the middle of the highway. We condsider them pest around her, and tend to think "oh it's just an alligator, watch out or it'll rip your leg out". I found it pretty funny that these people were going nuts over an alligator. Makes me think what else I simply toss aside...

Alligator captured near Los Angeles lake By GILLIAN FLACCUS,

LOS ANGELES - For months, the city's most famous reptile eluded paparazzi and faithful fans who gathered at the edge of a park lake to catch a glimpse of the A-list alligator. But when "Reggie" decided to come out, the gator did it in true Hollywood style: Swarmed by fans and photographers as it sunned by the water, the reptile was whisked away with a police escort as TV helicopters gave chase and broadcast live footage of the cagey critter's freeway journey to the zoo.

"We were petting him, talking to him," said City Councilwoman Janice Hahn, whose district includes the park. "I feel like I know him because I've invested a lot of time and energy in him."

The 6 1/2-foot alligator believed to be Reggie, who lurked in Harbor Regional Park's Lake Machado for two years, was wrestled into captivity Thursday. The wily beast became a celebrity as it eluded would-be wranglers and managed to disappear for 18 months until it recently resurfaced.

Bad timing may have ruined Reggie's free rein at the lake.

The alligator was spotted on land around 3:30 p.m. — just as officials and wildlife experts met nearby to find a way to snag the gator.

"We were about to talk about strategies for catching him when somebody called and said 'He's out of the lake,'" Hahn said. "So we said, 'Let's go now, let's get him.'"

The cold-blooded creature was sunning itself in an area fenced in several days ago in hopes of corralling it. Park officials closed a gate, and Los Angeles Zoo reptile expert Ian Recchio put a hook around the gator's neck.

Five or six men wrestled to restrain the thrashing alligator until its jaws could be duct taped shut. Hahn was certain the gator was Reggie.

Firefighters strapped it to a board and loaded it into an animal control truck for transport to the zoo. A police car escorted the truck as news helicopters followed.

The zoo planned to keep Reggie in quarantine from 30 to 60 days and then eventually introduce the animal to other alligators.

Reggie was an illegal pet allegedly tossed into the 50-acre lake by a former policeman when it got too big. The officer pleaded not guilty in April to 14 misdemeanor charges and awaits trial.

When the animal was first spotted in the murky lake in August 2005, it became a sensation as crowds gathered to catch a glimpse. Locals named it Reggie, though it's not clear whether the reptile is male or female.

Gloria and Danny Gutierrez said they would go to the lake several times a week and watch for Reggie. Gloria Gutierrez wore a white T-shirt decorated with the words "Welcome back, Reggie."

"We'd bring our chairs out here and a bag of fruit, and we'd talk with people we didn't even know," Danny Gutierrez said.

The gator inspired a zydeco song, two children's books and innumerable T-shirts. Students at Los Angeles Harbor College next to the lake adopted Reggie as a second mascot.

I've seen anhinga doing that near some of the lakes around here. Not qjite as impressive unless they're in a group, then it looks like some kind of avian R&B group!

(OK, back to work!)
