Lordy Lordy...

I'm not so good with history so I wouldn't be able to join in with the 1800 letter writing but maybe we can add an element of time travel to the letter writing, some how a post box has the ability to forward mail through the centuries so that a letter from the 1800 arrives in the 21st century and the reply makes it back to the 1800's.

The first letter arrives and a reply is sent back almost as a joke not really thinking that it will make it but then a reply to that letter is recieved back and so this strange penpal relationship is formed

reply to letter

Dear Charlotte

Your letter arrived, there's no-one called Charlie or Charles Hamerton living here although there is a bar called The Hamerton Arms across the street which is a strange coincidence.

I thought I would write and let you know so you can double check the address you have and re-send, you should probably try and get the zip-code too as I noticed that this was missing off the letter. I'm so sorry but I opened the letter by mistake and was so intrigued by your writing style that I began to read until I realised how improper that was - are you part of some historical club? If so I would love to know more about it, letter writing seems to be dying a slow and painful death with the advent of email and text. It's great that you go to such detail even creating your own post mark and everything. It all seems really exciting and so formal.

Anyhow I will ask around and see if I can locate your friend, I might even pop over the road and enquire in the bar, I'm something of a recluse so I don't get out much but this seems like as good excuse as any and my therapist will be so impress when I tell him in our session on Wednesday.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully

Margot Tanner

Dear Mrs. Tanner,

Greetings,
Charles is my brother, he traveled east several months ago in the spring, when the trees began to swell. He went to labour in one of the steal mills. As you are aware from my letter finding occupation has been difficult, the dust is thick and earth is very parched. Many of our men folk have had to travel far away to find honest work. Our Dear President Roosevelt has now brought attention to the plight of our people who farm this great land. Praise God and thanks to the Farm Security Program we need Charles desperately to return home.
I do not mean to be presumptuous, but I must confess that I was confounded after receiving your letter, are you of a foreign land? The dark continent perhaps? I do not understand many of the expressions you have avail yourself of. Please, explain what is this bar, a zip-code, email, therapist are? Your vernacular is also very strange to me, what does it mean to “pop over the road“? Does this account for proper speaking in large eastern cities?
In regards to your inquiry as to my membership in an historical society, if you mean do I study the Good Book. Like all God fearing people I do, for which I presume and hope you do as well.
In all honesty, I must declare I am troubled that you would open such a personal letter address to my dear brother, however, unsuitable as this may be, I will pardon your transgression if you are able to locate him and convey our deep concerns for his well being and accelerate his hand to writ. His description is such, tall and lean, 10 hands high with broad shoulders, his eyes are deep green and his hair is thick with yellow. He is much like yourself, a recluse, and suffers from bouts of melancholy. When he left he wore a green woolen coat with a black silk trim on the collar and a brass eye hook catch.
I am grateful for every effort you spare that results in finding his location. I pray to the Lord that he is safe and that he will abundantly bless you for your assistance.

In Sincerity,
Charlotte Hamerton

Dear Charlotte

OK, I am now officially freaked out! I went (popped) over to the bar (place where people gather to socialise and drink) and yep your brother is pretty well known over there, seems he's quite the local hero around here, his picture hangs on the wall in the bar, you should be very proud.

I not afraid to say that all this has me in a bit of a spin, Dr Morgan my therapist (someone who charges you an exorbitant amount of money to listen to you talk for an hour) has upped my meds so excuse me if I am difficult to follow at times, the medication also leaves me with little in the way of social etiquette.

I'm under strict instruction not to respond to your letter but here I am responding, I can't help myself, it all feels so real, I'm holding your letter in my hand as I write this, I feel like I am going crazy, but if you are who you say you are then hold on to your knickers, get ready to be stunned.

With an American population of 295,734,134, yep that’s right 295,734,134, the postal service has devised a system to make distributing mail easier and more efficient, introducing the zip code, this code is usually made up of numbers and relates to particular areas within each State.

Email is Electronic mail which started in 1971 by a chap call Tomlinson. Its computer mail (do you even have computers yet?) its mail sent through airwaves, wireless via servers and (what the hell am I doing you're not going to understand all this - I don't even understand all of this)

Moving swiftly on:

Which President Roosevelt are you referring to Theodore (1901-09) or Franklin D. Roosevelt, (1933-45)

Charlotte, I'm afraid to say too much, I hope I haven't frightened you, I can't find the words to explain how this situation has come about and if I think about it too much I must admit that I feel that I am slipping into the madness of a deep psychosis, one that I may never recover from. I must stay lucid.

Perhaps an experiment to reassure my fragile mind, find something that can be buried, don’t tell me what it is just bury it, make sure no one is around, then write and tell me where it is.

I look forward to your reply with great anticipation.

Sincerely,

(Ms) Margot Tanner

Dear Mrs. Tanner,

I have tarried long in writing because I was in need of a balanced disposition in order to respond to your letter of last.

I have thought and prayed on the words you had written and I am convinced that you must be suffering greatly. However, confessing that long I believed you were possessed by the devil himself. We are a family of Second Day Adventist, distilled ciders are strictly forbidden. To accuse Charles of taking in spirits would not only ruin his good name, but he would be dammed for eternity. I know my brother well, he would never be scene in any drinking establishment. So I am convinced that you must be mistaken in regards to his identity.

Further, believing there are so many of Gods children living in the United States, not to mention such strange confusion in regards to the president of this great land is beyond all reason, natural or unnatural. I pray that you will find a doctor who will relive your suffering, prescribing more kindness than absinthe.

I must also be frank in regards to your request, I will not propagate a mind stricken with delusions by burying anything in the earth. This is pure nonsense. We have so little in possessions and what we do own is used for practical purposes alone. I will not trouble you more with wonderings of my brother, it is clear that in your condition you can not find, nor know where he can be found. To ease your mind, however, I have made arrangements and gathered funds to take the trip myself and with God's help I will find my brother.

Lastly, advised by the elders in our community I find it difficult to correspond with you further. In parting, I will say that I am praying for your soul hoping you will step out of the darkness and find your way into the light of the shepherd.

In God's good grace,
Charlotte Hamerton

Dear Charlotte,

I appreciate your concerns and I will not bother you further after this letter but I did feel the need to clarify.

You brother was indeed not a drinker, but he is respected in many establishments for his heroic endeavours during the fire at the Steel Works on April 7th 1936 in which he saved a great many lives at a risk to his own, many men were abandoned to perish but a small group led by your brother returned into the inferno pulling the men and young boys from the flames, he saved many but even with all his efforts 104 men died. The appalling safety measures in place at the Mill frustrated your brother, he believed that the deaths could so easily have been avoided. Charles Hamerton went up against some of the cities most influential leaders and brought the situation into the public arena, eventually securing compensation for the families who lost brothers, husbands, sons and fathers and introduced safety guidelines that went on to become employment law to ensure that a disaster of this kind would never happen again. Charles Hamerton became a figurehead of our society - does this sound like the man whom you call your brother Charlotte?

I am not going to force this onto you - you have your beliefs and I respect and share them but I can not avoid the fact that this is the year 2006 and the time you say you come from is part of our history some 70 years in the past.

On 9th March 1933, Your President Roosevelt will call a special session of Congress. He will tell the members that unemployment can only be solved "by direct recruiting by the Government itself." For the next three months, Roosevelt will propose, and Congress will pass, a series of important bills that will attempt to deal with the problem of unemployment. The special session of Congress will became known as the Hundred Days.

There will be another great World War starting with The German Army invading Czechoslovakia on 15th March 1939. This war will continue until Germany's surrender on 7th May 1945. America will remain in support of the allies but out of the conflict until their hand is forced by the attack on Pearl Harbour on Sunday, 7th December, 1941. 105 high-level bombers, 135 dive-bombers and 81 fighter aircraft will attack the the US Fleet at Pearl Harbour. In two hours 18 warships, 188 aircraft and 2,403 servicemen will be lost in the attack. The navy's three aircraft carriers, Enterprise, Lexington and Saratoga, will all be at sea at the time. The following day, President Franklin D. Roosevelt and a united US Congress will declared war on Japan.

Charlotte, I trust that you will think of me when these events that I have described in detail take place. Prepare yourself however you see fit.

I wish you every success in locating and bringing your brother home but pray that I have garnered your trust enough to remain until April 7th to allow him to live out what will become your families legacy.

Be well Charlotte,

Your distant friend,

Margot Tanner

I don't know why I gave an example of something in 1933, I was destracted sorry can we replace this with

"In 1936 Roosevelt was re-elected by a top-heavy margin. Feeling he was armed with a popular mandate, he sought legislation to enlarge the Supreme Court, which had been invalidating key New Deal measures. Roosevelt lost the Supreme Court battle, but a revolution in constitutional law took place. Thereafter the Government could legally regulate the economy"
