We are all wearing a version of that machine all the time; we're just unaware of it. It absolutely does diminish our senses of social responsibility. And yes, in a way, we are held responsible in that we all pay dearly for the misperception of reality.

So the goal in life is to remove the metaphysical Avatar machine? What would happen if we all "unplugged" simultaneously? Is World of Warcraft actually twisting our brains to believe that we're not culpable for our actions?
This would make an awesome The Matrix spin-off...
