My granfather only told this story once, but I'll never forget it...

The family was vacationing down in Florida in '62- my grandmother and mom were playing on the beach. So my grandfather decided to go out exploring in the Rambler...

As he was driving, he saw a road sign, "Oranges, U-Pick. $1.00"

He pulled over to pick up some fresh oranges for his girls. He grabbed a basket and into the orchards he went. It was the perfect time to pick- the oranges were perfectly round and plump. Big too.

He happened across two beautiful young women in the orchard. Obviously they had just come from the beach, as they were still in their "bathing togs". And one happened to be particularly well-endowed...

One of the women was carrying two large, freshly picked oranges, about chest high. My grandfather eyes them and comments,"Those are the biggest ones I've ever seen!"

The woman smiled, blushed and said "Thank you!" and ran off into the trees, giggling with her friend.

Realizing what he just said, he yelled at them "The ORANGES. I MEANT THE ORANGES!"

Best kind

I love Navel oranges. Sweet and juicy and the juice all runs down my chin.

Tuscon Oranges

My husband and I travelled to Arizona in 1996. We drove up to Flagstff, watched the snow fall at the Grand Canyon (yes, snow - I have a picture of him with a snowball, in front of it. Three days before we came, it snowed the heaviest in years outside of Phoenix) and, that same day, we drove all the way down to Tuscon where it was 80 degrees! It was so nice. We drove around until we found this little motel with orange trees growing around it. That night, after drinking at the B-52 bar, we went back to our motel room and on the way, picked the oranges off the tree.
Needless to say, they were not ripe!! Nothing tastes quite like a very underripe orange when you are drunk.

*random fact of the day*

I have red hair.

My mom used to tell me I got my hair from eating all the tomatoes, carrots, and oranges I did.

Or she would tell me it's cause when I was little, I peed on my head.

I prefered the story about the tomatoes, carrots, and oranges.

Wouldn't you?
I'd rather be making out.

Oh, I don't know- that would be quite the feat, being able to pee on your head. I bet you could sell tickets to see that sort of thing....

my sweater is orange.

i actually had this odd obsession with the word 'orange' when i was starting high school. i was certain i would change my middle name to Orange when i was old enough. i'm not sure why...

it reminds me of the poem my mom used to recite to me:
you can pick your nose
you can pick your friends
but you can't find a word that rhymes with orange.

In Houston, TX there's a great place called The Orange Show. It is architectural folk art built by a Houston postal worker who dedicated the whole place to the orange, his favorite food. He would give tours and talk to people about the healthy benefits of the orange.

Today, it is a non profit organization that supports the Houston Art Cars and other art related events. Tours are still available if you are ever in the area. Here's their website:
