i believe in the practice and philosophy of what we have agreed to call magic and what i must call the evocation of spirits though i do not know what they are, in the power of creating magic illusions in the visions of truth in the depths of the minds when the eyes are closed.

Come live with me, and be my love,
And we will some new pleasures prove,
Of golden sands, and crystal brooks,
With silken lines, and silver hooks.

I have endeavoured in this Ghostly little book, to raise the Ghost of an Idea, which shall not put my readers out of humour with themselves, with each other, with the season, or with me. May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and no one wish to lay it.

An optimist stays up until midnight to see the new year in. A pessimist stays up to make sure the old year leaves.

A boringist stays up to 9:30 pm and goes to bed to read until 9:40 pm. Wakes up at 1:02 am and says, "Oh, crap," rolls over and goes back into the past.

Reading is like the sex act - done privately, and often in bed.

i am like a book, with pages that have stuck together for want of use: my mind needs unpacking and the truths stored within must be turned over from time to time, to be ready when occasion demands.

in the greenest of our valleys
by good angels tenanted
once fair and stately palace
radiant palace reared its head
in the monarch thought's dominion
it stood there
never seraph spread a pinion
over fabric half so fair
banners yellow, glorious, golden
on its roof did float and flow
(this all this was in the olden time long ago)
and every gentle air that dallied
in that sweet day
along the ramparts plumed and pallid
a winged odour went away
wanderers in that happy valley
through two luminous windows saw
spirits moving musically
to a lute's well-tuned law
round about a throne, where sitting
(porphyrogene!)
in state his glory well befitting
the ruler of the realm was seen
and all with pearl and ruby glowing
was the fair palace door
through which came flowing, flowing, flowing
and sparkling evermore
a troop of echoes whose sweet duty
was but to sing
in voices of surpassing beauty
the wit and wisdom of their king

i dreamed that i stood in a valley, and amid sighs,
for happy lovers passed two by two where i stood;
and i dreamed my lost love came stealthily out of the wood
with her cloud-pale eyelids falling on dream-dimmed eyes:
i cried in my dream o women bid the young men lay
their heads on your knees, and drown their eyes with your hair,
or remembering hers they will find no other face fair
till all the valleys of the world have been withered away.

i know not how but as i count
the beads of former years
old laughter catches in my throat
with the very feel of tears

"i weep for you," the walrus said:
"i deeply sympathize."
with sobs and tears he sorted out
those of the largest size,
holding his pocket-handkerchief
before his streaming eyes.
