Steve Irwin killed in freak accident at sea

A DOCTOR has told of the desperate efforts to save Australian icon Steve Irwin after the Crocodile Hunter was struck in the chest by a stingray barb today.

Irwin, 44, died this morning after being fatally injured while filming a nature documentary off Queensland.

The news has shocked the nation and prompted a rush of tributes from politicians and the public alike.

it makes me very sad.....they were on the same page and really in love...rare. forgive me but was he acting dangerously when he died or shall I say more so then usual?

He was swimming above the stingray when its tail flicked up and the barb caught him directly in the heart. I have no idea what is considered a safe distance to keep from a stingray.

Still - I'd say you'd vote him Person Whose Early Demise Would Least Surprise You.

and i had the same thought immediately. i understand that he thought he was doing what he needed to do to promote conservationism, but now his two children have no daddy. it seems irresponsible to me that he was still out doing these dangerous things when he had two little kiddies at home to think of.

Before I saw that interview I thought he was a complete wanker. The interview changed that for me. He presented as a great raconteur and entertainer. He was also a down to earth person - I've see the family home at Australia Zoo and it was a fibro transportable. I really don't think he had a bad bone in his body.

A real shame. He was a conservationist and educator and showman who exposed ecological problems on an international level. He used the media in a positive way and loved and respected his audience young or old. My kids are grieving and so am I. Bless his family and please, bless this planet.
