My beloved Dad (no longer with us) once gave me very serious sit down advice; never own any fish because eventually they die....he was a poet and a writer and he gave them all names and involved histories, he even wrote poems to them. I only remember one name/ and I think it was the title of a poem as well: Tiresius the blind cave dweller.
As most kids do I didn't listen and now have a 20 gallon tank full of many fish that ocasionally die. No biggie to me, room for new ones.
I read that goldfish have a 3 sec memory, I wonder how they figured that out, but perhaps you feel better now?

I read elsewhere (I think it was the SDMB) that the three second goldfish memory thing was a bit of a myth; fish have memory lasting longer than that, it was said, as evidenced by things like the fact that they come to the surface of the tank whenever you open the lid, expecting food.
