Jack, I thought of you the other day looking at a flowerbed that is overflowing with colour just 'cause I gave some tiny bedding plants a little compost and fertilizer -- they ask so little, and they give so much.

Jack!!
Can you give me some advice on pruning a Texas sage? It's shrubby and growing across a sidewalk, but it's 2 or 3 years old. Is there a way to trim it so that it doesn't look leggy/weird? Most of the branches seem pretty small, but I'm hesitant. Also, what time of year? |

This is one of the best articles I've read about pruning and can be applied to just about any type of shrub. Google -> texas sage pruning and go to reviewjournal.com-Living-GARDENING: Stop pruning before it gets out of control (How tall is your plant now?)

If it's too close to the sidewalk now, you may want to remove it and plant something more narrow and compact. How wide is the planting bed?

No more than 2 ft, and it's right next to a door...that's the thing. These'll have to be trimmed square if they're going to work there. I've seen them look nice that way, but I'm afraid it'll turn out to be too late to train them that way.

How about a viney/ flowering plant that you can trail up a narrow trellis?

Hahaha!! I saw that on the news the other night. I'm going down to Cape May next weekend and will look for this and take some pictures. I was going to go this weekend but was concerned about the river flooding. We only got 3 in. of rain but the wind was at 65 mph at times.

All but one of the red basils perished, the green ones are thriving. I wonder why. I planted them at the same time. Should I retry with the red ones? I've got a few seeds left.

Make sure they are not being over watered. The green basil is the the native or natural plant so the red may be touchy. Are they planted in the ground or in a container? Let me know!!

In a container, on the windowsill. Half of the container is green, the other half should have been red.
