After an unknown amount of time, what used to be 5 colourful dots in the faint background were now 5 perfect round spheres forming vertical pentagon. The objects were still moving, but the speed had dropped dramatically as they approached. Susan fell down on her knees while trying to look at ďthemĒ coming her way. The light was so bright that she had to cover her face with one hand, looking trough a small crack between her fingers. She always kept the cardboard sign with her at all times, and with the other arm, she was waving it in triumph. She didnít notice that the other bystanders started to show loud signs of fright and panic. That is, everybody except the strange young man called Jonathon. Jonathon had stopped looking at the sky, and was staring intensely at Susan. What did this kneeling and frantic woman know, and why didnít she start running as he had expected her to do? Susan didnít notice him, or the fact that they were alone.

The air was still after the grand expulsion of light. The spehers remained in the sky, pulsing. There was no noise to be heard, except for the low purr of they emitted.

Susan, crouched over, her palms pressed against her eyes, whimpered. This is not what she expected. In her dreams they had landed quietly, almost pleasently and approached her with understanding.

This was not how it was supposed to happen.

Jonathon reached down and touched the bumpy line of vertabrae that ran down her back.

He could feel her ribcage swell as her lungs fought to catch a decent gulp of air.

"I expected you to run." His voice was unusually calm and knowing. Susan uncurled herself, and turned her head up slowly to see him. She was shaking and her head was throbbing.

"I tried to tell you about this part of the sequence the last time I saw you..." he said as her knelt down and held out his hand. And then she remembered.

Susan shook her head to clear it. So many things were happening so fast. Why was he here? She hadn't seen him in seven years, and now he was here, sitting beside her. For a brief moment, her feverish mind locked onto an idea, but like a florescent bulb that struggles to turn on, the idea flashed several brilliant waves of thought, and then became dark. Her brain switched it off to make room for the dancing lights in the sky. Something was happening!

Taking note of the new pattern forming in the sky, Jonathon pulled Susan to her feet.

For the first time, she spoke--a panic-stricken stream of barely articulate cries and questions: "But the people, where are all the people??!!"

"Quiet now. It's time," he said and he extended a paper-thin opaque square toward her. It expanded into cube and he scanned it over her arm. It glowed slightly. She felt an oddly familiar twinge in her wrist, under the scars she had inflicted upon herself from the sharpened end of her toothbrush while in the institution. Something was warming up under her skin and the sensation was moving up her arm and into her neck.

Susan was confused and scared and attempted to pull away but Jonathon held her still and firm, like a vet giving a dog its shot, soothing her all the while. A curtain of light descended upon them.

And they were gone.

For half a second, Susan was cold. It wasn't like being in a cold room, no, this was a cold that went completely through her. She could see nothing. It wasn't black, it wasn't white, it was just nothing. She felt as if her entire body had spread apart in a thousand different pieces. She took a breath to scream, only to realize that she couldn't take a breath at all. She wasn't suffocating, she just couldn't, and had no need to breathe. All the while, her mind kept tugging at her as if to say, "don't worry. Don't be afraid. You've been here before."

Then, the half second was over, and she was standing just as she had been. Jonathon's hand was on her arm, he was still holding the cube in front of her, and her right hand still clung to her cardboard sign as if it were the last thing in her life that she could hold onto. They were standing on a platform in a white room. There was a low humming sound coming from the walls all around her, and then she realized that she could also hear voices. Voices that were behind her. Slowly, she turned around.

End of Chapter 1

I must say, this story is getting really awesome! tnx Tinabina, Silverlock and all the others who participated so far! I think this is a nice moment to start a new thread, thus creating Chapter 2, so the story stays easily readable.. I'll start it off there. tnx!
