Larry slid out of the driver side, lit a cigar and said thoughtfully, "You know I was just thinking... When was the last time you saw an ad for coca cola?"

I considered responding, "Never mind that -- when was the last time you saw a dermatologist?" but, considering the circumstances, settled on "Watch out! Behind you!"

"You don't really think I'm going to fall for that old trick, do you?" Larry growled as he glared at me from beneath his low slung monobrow, taking a long slow drag from his cigarillo.

I shrugged and watched as Larry was sideswiped by a 1967 Plymouth Sports Fury (yellow) with New Jersey plates. I think they read "Dolce Vita" but I was distracted.

Larry, the pinto, the dead girl, and the Fury all tumbled, end over end, into the ravine on the other side of the now twisted and torn guard rail.

Unfortunately -- but all too predictably -- the Pinto erupted into a hellish ball of apocalyptic fire upon impact; thereby eradicating any trace of Larry, his polygallon hat, the girl, the Fury, its driver, the shovel, and my dignity.

My chest sank into a heavy sigh and, after turning around to reaquaint myself with the landscape, my stomach grumbled, "Time for breakfast."

Rocky stuck out his thumb and started walking down the road humming "Be my little good luck charm, whoa ho" and wondered where he could get a fried banana/peanut butter sandwich.

And, just as quickly as he appeared, Rocky, a memory from my childhood, retreated back into my sleep-deprived imagination, leaving me alone on the road.

"Ho hum, " said I as I rubbed my hands together briskly, "now how did I get here?"

But as I started walking back toward Las Vegas I could feel it all, the girl, Larry, the beautiful blossom of flame, all of it was fading from my memory.

And I knew -- more than I had ever known anything in my whole life (including, but not limited to, Carson City being the capital of Nevada; 2+2 being 4; and Washington having been the first president of the United States) -- that it was nearly dawn and, therefore, time for a drink.
