The "Explain Your Username" Thread!

I've always been kinda curious about the history behind the names we choose for ourselves online...

In some cases, the meaning is apparent, like for my good buddy 94cwqujwnn.

Or that long time favorite, NakedGirl. She may have been a spammer, but behind that cold, metallic, robotic exterior was a wildly creative piece of software trying to get free.

But seriously, especially with the new wave of toasters, please feel free to share your stories here!

I'll start:

I've always been interested in music (pretty much since my early childhood, where I would vocally match the pitches of sounds I heard, i.e. the telephone, the microwave, etc.), so when I got into improvisational jazz a couple of years ago, I loved the idea of someone being able to create a melody from thin air.

It also happened that during that same summer, I became a sci-fi fan and began reading Larry Niven's Ringworld series, which I still consider to be one of the most impressive series ever written. One of the minor characters in the latest book was a ghoul (species on the Ringworld that consumes dead carcasses) Protector named Tunesmith. The name stuck, and when I found out it had to do with music, I decided to adopt it as I gradually became accustomed to the internet (or should I say interblag?)!

So, technically speaking, my username refers to me, but not only to me.

There I was, a strapping young lad at the age of twelve when I first discovered internet message boards. When I was making my first account I was thinking "what would be the awsomest screen name ever" and the words "Digger Dude" appeared in my twelve year old head.

I'm still not sure what the thought process came to that name.

Lost Sadie

Well um it is a bitter name really...I'm quite embarrassed to tell.

But I will anyway...

Quite a few years ago my now ex-husband had an affair with a married "friend" of ours. His um, code name for her was Sadie as in Sexy Sadie she used the screen name of sadiered or something. In the end they both divorced their spouses and married each other. Isn't that a sweet story? Well she took my husband, some of my things grace her house, she gets to spend time with my child, and reaps the benefits of my ex's education that I paid for. He wasn't all that great of a catch really...so she can have him. But Sadie is a derivative of my name, she can have my last name, but not my first. I allowed her a lot but not that. So bitter or not my name is Lost Sadie. She took a lot from me but she couldn't be me. So she lost Sadie.

Yup bitter...but it makes me happy in a sick way to listen to the song Sexy Sadie:

Sexy Sadie what have you done
You made a fool of everyone
You made a fool of everyone
Sexy Sadie, ooh, what have you done

Sexy Sadie you broke the rules
You laid it down for all to see
You laid it down for all to see
Sexy Sadie, ooh, you broke the rules

One sunny day the world was waiting for a lover
She came along to turn on everyone
Sexy Sadie the greatest of them all

Sexy Sadie how did you know
The world was waiting just for you
The world was waiting just for you
Sexy Sadie, ooh, how did you know

Sexy Sadie you'll get yours yet
However big you think you are
However big you think you are
Sexy Sadie, ooh, you'll get yours yet

We gave her everything we owned
just to sit at her table
Just a smile would lighten everything
Sexy Sadie she's the latest
and the greatest of them all

Ha, She made a fool of everyone
Sexy Sadie
Ha, However big you think you are
Sexy Sadie

Sorry for all of that

Radio call sign...

As a young reservist in the Israel Defense Forces, my unit's code name (armored reconaissance company of a tank brigade) was "Wolf". Each crew was assigned a color to identify them, and the commander chose "Grey" for my crew because of my prematurely grey hair (I was more salt than pepper by age 24).

It was about 4 inches longer a couple of months ago. I cut 6 inches off and two have grown back.

I changed the link. I think this one works - except it's like life-size.

mine stands for "terence in paris". I thought it up during a pure moment of lack of inspiration, as I signed up to the ze frank show forum last october. I just wanted to post one message as a reaction to something I'd read on a stupid internet forum, for crying out loud. I wouldn't even dream about getting caught up in an online l like those nerd-people whom I thought should resolutely get a life.

6 months, 2000 posts, 500 PM's, three accounts, two tshirts, five projects, one song, three video clips, one party, one friendship later, I decided that perhaps I should revisit my initial reaction. Signing up here, I decided to become an acronym, a creature of mystery. Let others wonder and brood over what those three magic letters might signify....
