They are in another state. We've escaped that so far.

I'm not near the Victoria bushfires but there are some near me, not close or big enough to be worrying so far. Luckily none of my friends/relatives in Victoria have been caught up either, but still, it's not nice to be hearing about all that disaster Hope hfox is okay too, and any other Aussie monkeys I'm forgetting.

Brynn - how are doing in this holy hell? The Portland area must be so stressful with the heat.

I love it! My husband is grumpy but I'm relaxed and warm and sweaty and feelin' GOOD! It's sunny. the skies are blue. I can just feel myself expanding and getting energized. I actually got some errands done today. I'm not cold and miserable and it's so wonderful!

I'm sitting directly in front of the air conditioner right now, damn the expense. I spent most of the day outside today, though.

It was 107F yesterday - a record for Portland. It's been a little difficult sleeping, but we've been putting the air mattress out on the deck to sleep outside because it's too expensive to run the AC all night.

To deal with the heat yesterday, we went for a hike to one of my favorite places on earth - Oneonta Gorge - a very narrow gorge just off the Columbia River Gorge. The cliffs are high and covered with moss, and the moment you enter the passageway, the temp drops about 10 degrees (to "only" about 97F) so it felt great. To get to the end where the waterfall is, first you have to climb a huge log jam, then at one point you have to wade through icy waist-high snow melt from the falls for a few minutes. I was fully clothed. It was heavenly.

The last time we went ten years ago, there were only about five people there that day. Yesterday it looked like Disneyland - I counted about 70 people all in this narrow 15 foot wide cliff hallway, and then got bored counting.
When we got to the end, it deepens into another pool at the base of the falls, where there were guys diving head first off the cliff face. You know those monkeys in Japan that hang out at the base of the volcano in the hot pools to stay warm? That's what everyone was doing in the cold water. Some guys had obviously been there a long time and were even shivering and starting to show signs of hypothermia.

Here's the approach to the falls - the log jam is actually higher than it looks - it's about 15 ft. at its tallest...it's a little dangerous, but everyone ignores the signs:

This what you get to see at the end of the hike:

How about you? I hear from relatives in Texas and Missouri that things are actually kind of upside down - that they're getting all the rain and cool weather.
