hey I just looked up 'grits' and apparently it isn't some dubious kind of extremely overcooked meat at all.

^Being a US southerner, I never cease to be hilariously amazed at what people who've never had grits think of them. It's just ground corn, really. Like really coarse polenta, but made from corn that's been soaked in lye (hominy).

If you think grits are weird, you should try huitlacoche.

It's corn, too, but the kernels have been infected with a kind of fungus. I'm told the flavor is similar to some kind of mushroom, but I find I am unwilling to give it a try. I can't get over the name in English: corn smut.

definitely the dirtiest looking corn i've ever seen...it's like the satyr of corn on the cob

^I should have put it in the angels and devils thread.

I've heard that it can have ergotine in it, which is hallucinogenic and can be dangerous, especially for pregnant women. But it's sometimes called a Mexican/corn truffle and is supposedly a delicacy.

This is what it looks like out of the can. I think it's usually made into enchiladas with mole.

The review that pic is from is pretty funny.
