this may be a big stinking mess, but let's give it a shot. take the topic suggested by the previous poster and think of the best and worst aspect of said topic. for example, topic: email

nothing worse: when someone sends you something that's described as "the funniest thing you'll ever read" and then they stand by your desk while you read it, waiting for you to laugh. and it's just... not... funny.

nothing better: having someone you've lost touch with and really miss suddenly find your email address and send you a "how's life" message out of the blue.

make sense?

This one is a tie:
1) When a piece of music is so connected with an event that you can smell and taste just what it felt like the first time you heard it.
2) When the lyrics to a song are so beautiful that you cry when you sing them.

Nothing worse: Rabid sports fans making asses of themselves just cuz "their team" (usually composed of 90% out of towners imported to their city to boost a crappy performing team) just happens to pull their heads out of their arses long enough to win a pennant.

Nothing better: A ball field full of happy kids playing a game of "any sport" with the support of their parents...support with out pressure to win but rather encouragement to have fun.

Nothing worse: wandering around a generic hall full of trial lawyers who have never met each other, drinks in hand, eating bad appetizers out of complete and utter boredom while a very loud 70's cover band plays.

Nothing better: a spontaneous get-together around a patio table with candles, beer, wine, good tunes, playing "two truths and a lie" with fellow actors. This inevitably turns into an evening of non-stop laughing, storytelling and dancing, with drunk friends sleeping over on the couch or in hammock. The next morning, all who are still moving eat breakfast together and go for a hike in the Gorge.

nothing worse: absolutely loving a book from start to near-finish, only to find out in the denouement that the author has no skill for resolution.

nothing better: a long luxurious visit to the bookstore, browsing and reading and picking up anything at random that seems appealing, finally settling on a title, taking it home, and enjoying your selection so much that you finish it in a day.

nothing worse: realizing that since the human race is flawed in almost every possible way, is loaded with wanton greed, makes war and war heroes into something to be revered instead of disdained, and is full of politicians that don't care about anything other than power, world peace is probably something none of us will see in our lifetime
nothing better: closing your eyes and visualizing what it would be like if humans could only learn that violence for any reason, and in any uniform, is not a solution for anything, anytime, anywhere; imagining what global problems could be conquered if only we'd learn to work together
