As I approve of a youth that has something of the old man in him, so I am no less pleased with an old man that has something of the youth. He that follows this rule may be old in body but can never be so in mind.

If you need a certain vitality you can only supply it yourself, or there comes a point, anyway, when no one’s actions but your own seem dramatically convincing and justifiable in the plot that the number of your days concocts.

My chief humor is for a tyrant. I could play Ercles rarely, or a part to tear a cat in, to make all split.

The young always have the same problem - how to rebel and conform at the same time. They have now solved this by defying their parents and copying one another.

If youth but knew; if age but could.
Wives in their husbands’ absences grow subtler,
And daughters sometimes run off with the butler.

Nobody knows the age of the human race, but everybody agrees that it is old enough to know better.

My experience is that as soon as people are old enough to know better, they don’t know anything at all.
