Did I mention that a guy I went to high school with, Dan Mathews, is the director of international campaigns at PETA?

He's been arrested like a gazillion times.

He used to be this angry, punker, quick-witted loner who worked at McDonalds, and now he gets invited for dinner to Paul McCartney's house.

Amazing. I love America.

PETA is actually catagorized as a terrorist organization by the US Government.

as well they should be, they are pretty freaky.

If by "freaky" you mean "passionate," yes, they are.

Greenpeace is another example. EarthFirst: insane.

Yeah, I wouldn't join one now, either, (but I did put stickers on shampoo bottles for PETA when I was in high school), but they do serve a purpose:

Most people aren't even aware of environmental problems until some nutcake ties him or herself to a tree for a coupla days. Or dashes in front of a whaling boat. Or burns up a ski mountain. Or ...

I agree Large Marge... as much as we might disagree with their politics or methods, they do at least bring to mind some of the things we might not otherwise worry about. I think in general it's important to have around voices, even radical ones, that remind us to think about things we don't always think about on our own.

I do have a problem with killing for pleasure, or killing for trivial purposes. I don't think it's right to go around throwing red paint on people (heck, that only gives them a reason to buy another fur coat!) but I have to say, I get kind of a sick feeling in the pit of my stomach when I see someone walking around in a mink or holding a crocodile bag. I'm also not sure how I feel about animal testing... at the very least, I think that probably a lot of what happens under the guise of "humane medical testing" isn't as necessary as we're led to believe -- but this is an empirical argument (one that right now I just don't have the facts to back up ). That said, I am a meat-eater, and one who has benefited from many useful drugs. I don't *think* that makes me a hypocrite.

Anyway, just my two cents' worth!

Here's a story on a related note:

They arn't doing anything....

LOVE that idea.

Johnson & Johnson could pay them, say, 50 cents an hour to drop red dye and perfume into their eyes for several hours a day.

Beats sitting in the cell all day.

I have been saying this for years. These people have a debt to society. Give them benefits for consent, and Let them try the new products.

I also think that criminals should have to sign something about donating blood. Blood shortages? Never again. We can hook up the healthy people without causing any harm.

Good idea?

It might also act as a deterrent.

YES! Instead of giving them fully equipped gyms, libraries and TV. Or atleast, make them earn those privileges for a change.

it's a great thing to see a consensus and all but there's a prohibition against cruel and unusual punishment. it's why that sort of thing isn't done right now.

sorry.
