Ok lots more replies I hadn't seen, better get quicker at this.
Yes you got the gender right.
I am well aware there are children living in New York, as there are all over the world; but not all in places you'd like to visit for the w/e/...

tell us about yer self Fidgy.

Umm I'm afraid potted biographies aren't my strong point! What do you want to know?

How could I forget FAO? Oh yeah, now I remember.

But a 12 y/o girl would love it. They hand out samples in the candy department. Every kind of toy you could ever imagine.

I loved New York City. I've been there three times.
The rush of people, the noise, the speed of everything. Everywhere you look something is moving, flashing, or eyecatching.

I took a taxi to the Museum of Natural History. Two things I had always wanted to do. A New York Cab ride! I bought a pretzel.
I took a subway too. I went to the Trade Towers where my BIL worked and looked out the windows. I went to the Statue of Liberty. I walked in Times Square. I ice skated in that big arena you see with the gold statue. It is just so fast there.

I was given this advice. Don't walk looking up. The buildings are tall and you want to see so people who are not used to it, look up. This means they probably have spending money, and leaves them open to being jostled and vulnerable. Keep your purse in front of you. Have fun.
It worked for me.

If you're looking for a hotel, the last time I stayed there we stayed at The Belvedere. It's a nice little boutique-ish hotel about a block from Times Square and close to Broadway/Theatre District (walking distance). Prices are pretty reasonable, too.
