inDIE rock

for lyrics, i like

1. the weakerthans - a band from winnipeg canada - the lead singer/songwriter is the former bassist of propagandhi. both albums (fallow and left and leaving) are fantastic, especially the songs "confessions of a futon-revolutionist," and "watermark."

( . . . the airport's almost always empty this time of the year, so let's go play on a baggage carousel . . . )

2. eels - they deal with serious issues like death and mental illness in creative ways, often from this child-like perspective that hits the spot. good album: electroshock blues (but the other 2 are also great).

Andrew Bird's Bowl of Fire, the album Oh! The Grandeur, has great lyrics and catchy tunes. Andrew Bird is the Fiddle player from the Squirrel Nut Zippers.

The tune "Beware" - has the greatest (and all too true line)
"Don't belive a thing that you might here,
at least for the last 30-40 years
Cause it wasn't long ago, just before the reign of Nero,
we had no concept of Zero"

Drew

i don't think so

hayden, maybe, and i don't know about the band that that other guy was referring to,

but although some songs of the eels and weakerthans are on the softer side, i would never consider them "emo." maybe you could clue me in - isn't emo like enya and dave matthews band? i appreciate "haunting melodies" and lyrics that deal with the complications of real life. i hate the idea of negating genuine talent and intelligence by reducing it into a lame-sounding genre.
perhaps i should re-title the thread? i called it that as an inside joke with someone. what i basically mean is indie-rock.

you rock, em!

i registered just to post that the weakerthans are my very favourite band. are they big in the u.s.?

and theyre not emo. ive heard them called post-punk, i think thats closer. emo is more sappy, like dashboard confessionals.

anyways, theyre one of the best live bands ive ever seen.

"...hold on to the corners of today, and we'll fold them up to save until its needed..."
