Help! Funeral music!

I've been put in charge of deciding what music should be played at my grandmother's cousin's funeral. I have met this man maybe three times, but because he had few friends and the only family is us, I've been told to decide. He died on Monday, aged 92.

Definitely classical music, particularly violin. He collected original sheet music, written by and signed by composers such as Beethoven, Mozart, Debussy, to name a few... some of which people didn't realise existed until he bought them in job lots at auctions. Whilst clearing his house yesterday, my Dad also found around 50 mint condition personal letters from a number of composers.

Help! Any ideas???

well, mozart's requiem would seem a good choice.

Ashokan Farewell -always gets them.

Bach's Air on G String - (haha I know, but that's the real title)

Beethoven's Sonata No.8 c Minor, "Pathétique"

Chopin Prelude in E Minor, Op 28, No4 - (piano, but still.. )

Pachabel's Canon - sooo cliche for weddings. so nice for funerals

Samuel Barber Adagio For Strings

Elgar 'Nimrod' from Enigma Variations - probably the most bittersweet piece i've ever played

Massenet - Meditation, from 'Thais' yes, yes yes.

I was just about to suggest these!

The Elgar would be wonderful.

Maybe some of the slower movements from Bach's Sonatas and Partitas?

There she is!

I went to a concert around the time of the start of the Iraq invasion. The conductor gave a speech about world peace then they played the Enigma Variations. There wasn't a dry eye in the house.

Karma - your selections sound a+.
