That is indeed an interesting property of our cognitive system.
The Gestalt theory attempts to explain this capacity. The wikipedia page on the subject is quite well done; i've quoted a few definitions from it below: Gestalt psychology (also Gestalt theory of the Berlin School) is a theory of mind and brain that proposes that the operational principle of the brain is holistic, parallel, and analog, with self-organizing tendencies; or, that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts. The Gestalt effect refers to the form-forming capability of our senses, particularly with respect to the visual recognition of figures and whole forms instead of just a collection of simple lines and curves. The key principles of Gestalt systems are emergence, reification, multistability, and invariance. Here is the emergence property - the others are described on the wiki page: ![]() Emergence is demonstrated by the perception of the Dog Picture, which depicts a Dalmatian dog sniffing the ground in the shade of overhanging trees. The dog is not recognized by first identifying its parts (feet, ears, nose, tail, etc.), and then inferring the dog from those component parts. Instead, the dog is perceived as a whole, all at once. However, this is a description of what happens in vision and not an explanation. Gestalt theory does not explain how the percept of a dog emerges. |

I'd like to post something in this thread, but as a product of the American public school system, I don't think I can use the word "gestalt" in a sentence credibly.

hmmm...I didn't understand an iota of it. Must be a human thing.
Twas kinda cool tho... Ergo, never at a loss to add something; Just try this, it is from an orthopedic surgeon............ This will boggle your mind and you will keep trying over and over again to see if you can outsmart your foot, but, you can't! It's preprogrammed in your brain! Here goes....... 1. WITHOUT anyone watching you, as they will think you are GOOFY.....while sitting where you are, at your desk in front of your computer, lift your right foot off the floor and make clockwise circles. 2. Now, while doing this, draw the number "6" in the air with your right hand. Your foot will change direction.
