I have just turned 19 which just happens to be the legal drinking age in BC. I have a few questions that I hope may be answered since I have not really been much of a drinker until now. What would you recommend for a good bottle of scotch? What, in your opinion, is a good and incredibly dark beer besides Guinness? How much does a bottle of 151 usually go for (in Canadian currency if possible)?

If your gonna get scotch, get yourself a bottle of The GlenLivet...if you haven't gotten your liver used to alcohol...for God's sakes, don't get scotch...get yourself some wine coolers! Happy Birthday by the way...

I think Murphy's is a decent dark one. Not as flavorful as Guinness, but smooth. Creamy.

Glenfiddich isn't bad scotch. Glenlivet, Glenmorangie. Seems the Glens are a good way to go.

And I agree with katykaty re the stout -

If you want something with plenty of kick and richness you should try to get ahold of the stout they brew at Firestone Brewery in Buellton, CA - don't know if they export to Canada but damn, that's good stuff.

Oban is nice for the uninitiated. same with Aberlour. i'm a Laphroig man myself.

sam smiths taddy porter is pretty spot on in the dark beer category

Laphraoig is good. But there are lots to choose from. My favourite is Jura (there's only one distillery on the island, so it's quite expensive).

Be warned that whisky hangovers are weird. When they happen to me, I tend to find my eyeballs feel like they're pointing in different directions.

Beamish is the best stout, IMHO. And it always tastes better in Ireland.

But the best dark beer (as in dark lager, not stout or English bitter) is Krusovice from the Czech Republic. God I love that beer. The best place to drink it is at the cafe at Mozart's house in Prague, looking out over the city with the love of your life

Oooh, Balvenie. Forgot about that one. Shocking, considering that my printer is held up by two of the tubes that the bottles come in. GOOD one, lapietra.

At this point you won't be able to tell the difference between any of them...
That said, It's all about personal taste. Forget brands for a minute and look at the two primary types. I prefer single malt, others like blends.
Go get a bunch of the little taste tester 2oz bottles. Compare those, find one you like and then go buy a big bottle.
If the purpose is to get pinned, don't waste money on expensive scotch. Buy a bottle of Rye, a bottle of Coke and giver.
Don't forget the litre of Gatorade and Advil for the next day...

P.S. I prefer Bourbon to Scotch..
Look into Old Grand Dad's, Blantons, Bookers, Makers Mark (Black label)
