apple green
or is it chartreuse? crisp and juicy tart and tangy wakes me up and makes me happy spring leaves, tender shoots and velvety soft grass martians and sugar snap peas a memory of his eyes... challenging bright, sensuous light slightly rebellious, uncontainable and very good

fluorescent yellow
jumps out at the page
pointing out the points that hold the paragraphs together or perhaps making your mistakes glare out at you and yell: “Hey!! Don’t forget about me! I need to be revised!” Sometimes it is a way of conveying something to a client, for instance, in a publication proof, “this is supposed to be in color,” on a black & white ad printout. Lemongrass is a pretty bright yellow. Not quite fluorescent, but I still remember those long summer days when I was a kid, nibbling on it. |

Asphalt
black, gray and white constellation of tar, pitch, gravel
Yellow trails of paint, the yellow road, your destination little shiney black patches of run-over chewing gum dried blood from the roadkill, a stray feather from a run-over owl. Black, caked asphalt, cracked beneath the pressure of truck tires moving goods from the Long Beach Harbor, paper, gasoline, soda a million billion commuters rolling through each day, cracks in the asphalt |

Brown:
Pine needles covering the trail on a winter hike in Little Talbot State Park. Ferns covering a long dead oak tree waiting for Spring rains to wake them up. A mare and foal I found had spent the night behind my tent on Cumberland Island. Her ribs were showing as it had been a dry winter. Old bull gator gliding through the tannin stained water in the Okefenokee. Cypress trees along Billy's Lake, paddling towards Billy's Island. My wood canoe paddle dipping into and out of the water. Thrashers flying overhead as I toss the ball for my big dog, Kodi, so named because he is brown like a Kodiak Grizzly. Brown and white like my little dog Fred. Not so much that as brown and gray. Fred and dirty are synonymous. A brown blur as Kodi and Fred play Alpha Dog Smackdown in the back yard. They take turns winning. Cabinet grade plywood as I rip it on the table saw. Even richer brown when I cover it with contact cement before covering brown plywood with black laminate for another countertop. Vickie's eyes as she reaches for me in the morning light. Corn flakes in the morning while we watch Scooby-Doo. |

Peach and Blue
My mother's house is painted peach and blue. Psycho colours says my friend. I agree And think of gravel crunching Which was her car arriving And Dad putting down his violin He knew he could play no more. And the tango for two, Aztec stripes of brightness and joy, Became for three And turned to peach and blue. |
