Worst dive bar - Definitely the Cecil Hotel on 4th Ave and 3rd Street SE. If you're visiting Calgary, NEVER - I repeat - NEVER stay there if you can possibly help it! I've never been inside, but I think they allow knives, guns, pool cues (although there are no pool tables) and you don't have to leave your helmet at the door.
Best dive bar - Well, I've heard it called a dive, but I STRONGLY disagree. The Ship and Anchor Pub on 17th Ave and 5th Street SW. Inexpensive pints, interesting crowd, patio (where you can have a good chat with the bums that pass by), very smokey atmosphere - although there is a non-smoking section - solid tunage, a very clean women's washroom (although I've heard nasty things about the men's), dart boards (nothing better than a drunk with a sharp instrument), live music Saturday afternoons and some weekday evenings, and the occasional nutbar! What more could you ask???

Funny! The Cecil in Vancouver could quite safely be called a dive bar as well. It's low on the peeler bar totem pole ... last year they had midget strippers. I'm not kidding.

Talking

Calgary's Cecil doesn't have strippers as far as I know, unless it's unintentional! But they do have a lovely bunch of very dirty drunks hanging around just outside the doors... lord knows what it's like on the inside!

I'm too old and conservative now to go to true dive bars. I would find myself wondering ... why is my seat sticky? What's that floating in my pint? I wonder what the house wine is? If I have another beer, will someone follow me to the can and assault me? Is that guy over there sporting the spiderweb jail tat because he's aryan nations and just got out of jail, or is it the south american "web of life" tat?

Ah, for the innocence of my youth... man, I got up to some shenanigans and had a lot of fun, but in retrospect I was very lucky that nothing too awful happened to me.

Yeah, I think I'm a little too old for the dive bar thing too. It used to not bother me as much when I was younger, but now I demand a clean bathroom! Although, I spent just over two years in Lagos, Nigeria... you wanna talk about disgusting bathrooms?? And after awhile, anything floating in my drink I just flicked out. It's amazing what you get used to! But now that I'm back in Canada, I'd probably send the drink back! I did send back a drink a couple of times when I first got to Africa, but I realized that they were just sticking their fingers in my drinks to pick out whatever was floating in there anyway, so what's the diff?! At least I knew where MY fingers had been!

LOL good point about the fingers.

I still like to go out to bars where the music is live and loud, and ripped jeans are no problem, and it doesn't cost an arm and a leg to buy a few beer. *sigh* it seems like those are becoming fewer and far between.
