Euro mini-meetup
Hi all
Well, Rune and I went drinking in Oxford last night. I will post more and some photos when I have sobered up a little and the photos come back from the developers. But I will say that Rune is a terribly wonderful chap and just like you all imagine, except not in drag (usually). No herrings either. dC

So, the tale of last Thursday...
I met Rune and his girlfriend at the scenic splendour of Oxford's Gloucester Green bus station, after I'd watched about three or four coaches pull in from London and given every bearded arrival close scrutiny. Susie was off to meet some of her old Oxford friends, so Rune and I headed to Gino's, the nice Italian restaurant nearby. As has been reported from other reunions, we got on really well right from the start. Rune wanted rocket salad for his starter (=rucola in American-speak) but they didn't have it, so we both had melon and parma ham. Nice bottle of red wine, then some hot chilli amatriciana pasta. I had some tartufo, while Rune had some sambuco which just about flamed in a thistle-shaped glass. Then we had a couple of big shots of grappa because Rune wouldn't believe me that it can actually taste nice. Nothing like some hard-core ethanol to get the evening off to a good start. Got the camera out, and after Rune had assured the waiter that we weren't gay, he took a couple of photos of us. By this time we were getting on famously, so we headed off to my favourite Oxford pub, the Turf, for further refreshments, in the rain. It was busy as usual, so we had to stand to drink our Old Speckled Hen. We discussed Rune's fantastic new house and his illustrious naval career, and I accidentally spilt the glass of wine being carried past me by a woman I turned out to know but whose name I couldn't immediately remember, to my acute embarrassment. Eventually I could remember so we went and had a chat, and Rune and I talked about how cool it was to meet ZeMonkeys and how we have to go to Amsterdam to get drunk with Frieda. After two or three pints, it was 11pm and the ridiculously early British closing time which prompted Rune to declare for the second time of the evening "You've got to serve me, I've come all the way from Norway!". So it was time to head for the Love Bar, a late-night drinking establishment, which turned out to be closed for a private party. Sooo, we went to the Purple Turtle which is the student drinking nightclub type place. Fortunately by this point I was too drunk to care about meeting any of my students. We were taking photos of ourselves all the while, but by this stage of the evening Rune was starting to get his finger stuck in front of the lens. We had a dance and a drink, and a dance and another drink, and this is where things start to get hazy. At some point in the evening we'd bumped into my mate James, I think it was in the PT, so we headed back to my old graduate college to go to the 24-hour bar. I don't really remember a whole lot about this phase, except that we drank Hoegaarden and danced and sang some more to early-1980s classics. It finished about 3:30 or so, and I sent Rune off in the direction of the railway station while I headed off to find a taxi home. I got home about 4 am, and after three hours sleep and not enough sobering up, I had to get up and go to work. I had arranged to see Rune and Susie next day at 11 to show them around my college, but there was no call from them, so I tried to call. There was no reply on Rune's mobile, so I'm now worried that something bad happened and Rune didn't make it home.... I struggled on and taught my tutorials on superpower detente in the 1970s. Rune! Are you OK? Talk to me!
